Ice bath chiller sizing for a tropical climate
An ice bath chiller rated for Europe runs far harder in Lombok's heat. The real sizing math — heat load, HP per litre,…

Surf retreats in Kuta, pool-deck villas, Mataram gyms and hotel wellness zones are all putting in plunges. Who builds what — and what this island changes.

Most enquiries we take for ice baths in Lombok now skip the "does cold work" stage entirely. The decision is made; the questions are practical. Which tub survives this climate, which chiller holds temperature through a 32°C afternoon, what happens with water on an island where supply varies street by street, and how a 300 kg build reaches a site that ends in a dirt track. This guide answers the geography: who is installing plunges here in 2026, what those setups look like, and what Lombok specifically changes.
It sits alongside the rest of the journal rather than repeating it — temperature targets, chiller mathematics and water chemistry each have their own guide. What follows is the island layer.
Surf and fitness retreats around Kuta Lombok lead the queue. A camp running two board sessions a day sells recovery as part of the package, and cold immersion is now expected by guests who plunge at home; most retreat briefs ask for two or three tubs side by side so a group rotates through without queueing.
Private villas come second — one shaded tub near the pool in Selong Belanak, Senggigi or the hills above Kuta, run daily by the owner and increasingly listed as a feature on rental platforms. Third are gyms and training studios in Mataram, where the brief is durability: a dozen users a day, fast drain and refill, a shell that shrugs off chalk and barbells. Hotels close the list, folding a plunge into a larger wellness zone beside the hot room rather than standing it alone.
Two builds cover almost every site. A cedar tub run on bagged ice suits a villa used a few times a week; a chiller-fed plunge is the default for anything daily or commercial, because in 28–32°C air an ice-run tub serving a retreat group turns ice supply into a part-time job. The chiller itself is the one component you cannot spec from a catalogue — a unit rated for a temperate climate loses the afternoon here, and the full sizing method is in our chiller guide for tropical installs.
Indicative figures from our pricing page: a cedar ice bath from IDR 42,000,000 (about USD 2,600), a chilled cold plunge from IDR 68,000,000 (about USD 4,200). Multi-tub retreat setups are quoted per site, since shared plumbing and a single larger chiller usually beat three separate units.
Lombok water reaches a tub from a well, PDAM mains or a delivery truck, and quality varies enough between sources that we test before the first fill — hard well water scales heat exchangers and clouds fast. A private tub in a cheap-delivery area can simply drain and refill every few days. Anything shared — retreat, gym, hotel — needs a filtration and sanitation loop, because cold water still grows biofilm, just more slowly; the full system is covered in our cold plunge water treatment guide.
Power worries owners more than it should. A plunge chiller draws a fraction of what a sauna heater pulls, and a standard villa PLN connection runs a 1 HP unit without an upgrade. The check matters only when the plunge shares a supply with a large heater, or the site already runs near its limit.
The installs that stall are almost never stalled by equipment. It's the water test nobody ran, or the last hundred metres of track a delivery truck can't take — both solvable, both cheaper to solve before the tub ships.
Hardware reaches the island through Lembar port or across from Bali, then travels by road. The south coast around Kuta is an easy run from the port; north-coast sites add hours, and the final stretch to a hillside villa decides whether a pre-assembled tub arrives whole or gets finished in place. The Gili Islands add a boat: no cars there, so tubs cross on a supply boat and move by handcart, which favours lighter shells and chillers two people can lift.
Timelines hold for most of the island — two to three weeks for a cedar tub, two to four for a chilled plunge — with a day or two added for Gili transfers. Servicing runs the same way: we schedule maintenance rounds by area, so a plunge on Gili Trawangan or in Senggigi is not waiting a week for a single call-out.
Few installs stop at cold. Most retreats run the plunge beside a hot room, and our sauna Lombok builds are the other half of that contrast setup — same crew, same site visit. If you are pricing a plunge for a villa, gym or retreat, send photos of the spot, your water source and what is on the meter, and get in touch for a spec matched to the actual site.

Common questions
Surf and fitness retreats around Kuta Lombok lead, usually with two or three tubs so a group can rotate. Private villas on the south coast and in Senggigi come second with a single shaded plunge by the pool, followed by gyms in Mataram and hotels adding a plunge to a wellness zone.
Yes. The Gilis have no cars, so a tub crosses on a supply boat and moves by handcart. That favours lighter shells and chillers that two people can lift, and adds a transfer day or two to the schedule.
Typical windows are two to three weeks for a cedar ice bath and two to four weeks for a chilled cold plunge, with extra transfer time for Gili sites. Multi-tub retreat setups with shared plumbing are scheduled per site.
Indicative figures: a cedar ice bath from IDR 42,000,000 (about USD 2,600) and a chilled cold plunge from IDR 68,000,000 (about USD 4,200). The final number depends on site access, water source and available power.
Water quality varies by source — well, PDAM mains or trucked delivery — so it should be tested before the first fill. A private tub can run on drain-and-refill; any shared tub at a retreat, gym or hotel needs a filtration and sanitation loop, because cold water still supports growth, only more slowly.
