Ice bath chiller sizing for a tropical climate
An ice bath chiller rated for Europe runs far harder in Lombok's heat. The real sizing math — heat load, HP per litre,…
Build
From the first WhatsApp photo to the first löyly: a realistic calendar for an island where the heater comes by ship, the road ends in gravel, and the rainy season has opinions.

A sauna build in Lombok takes six to ten weeks from the first photo to a working room: 2–3 days to a visualisation, about a week to a fixed price after the site survey, 2–4 weeks for the heater and imported timber to reach the island from Java once the deposit lands, and 1–3 weeks of site work depending on whether it is an infrared cabin, a custom built-in room or an outdoor cabin on a new deck. A chilled ice bath runs 2–4 weeks end to end. Those numbers hold for the south coast and Senggigi in the dry season; the Gilis add a boat, the wet season adds patience, and a heater that is out of stock in Jakarta adds the most of all.
We publish this calendar because the second question after price is always "before Christmas?" or "before the retreat opens?" — and because the honest answer depends on things that are not in our workshop. As Sauna Lombok we control the build; the island controls the rest.
Send photos of the spot, rough dimensions and what is on the meter. Within two or three working days you get a layout drawing showing the cabin in your space, a heat-load calculation and a first indicative range. No visit needed for this step, which is why owners abroad often start here months before they fly in.
The site survey takes an hour: measurements, the electrical panel and cable route, ventilation path, floor and drainage, and access for materials. For Kuta, Selong Belanak, Mataram and Senggigi we schedule it within the week; Sire, Tanjung and the Gilis are grouped into a north run. The fixed price follows within a few days of the survey, itemised so you can see what the site — not the sauna — is costing you. Warranty terms are set out in that quote. For calibration before the quote arrives, read the Lombok sauna cost guide.
The deposit triggers ordering. Heaters, controls and cedar or thermowood come from distributors in Java; when the exact heater is in stock in Jakarta or Surabaya, the crate reaches Lombok via Lembar port or the Bali ferry route in 2–3 weeks. When it is not — a specific 9 kW tower heater, a particular glass door — the factory lead time adds 3–6 weeks, and we tell you that before you pay, not after. Local timber for decks and screens (ulin, bengkirai) is sourced on the island and does not gate the schedule. Cedar tubs for ice baths are built in our workshop in parallel and are usually waiting for the chiller rather than the other way round.
| Build | Site work | Total from deposit | What usually gates it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infrared cabin | 1–2 days | 2–4 weeks | Cabin shipping; needs only a 16 A circuit |
| Cedar ice bath (no chiller) | 1–2 days | 2–3 weeks | Workshop schedule; water test on site |
| Chilled cold plunge | 2–4 days | 2–4 weeks | Chiller stock; drainage and power point |
| Custom built-in sauna | 2–3 weeks | 6–8 weeks | Heater lead time; PLN upgrade to 11,000 VA |
| Outdoor cabin sauna on a new deck | 2–3 weeks + deck | 7–10 weeks | Deck and roof by others; access for panels |
| Full wellness zone | 4–6 weeks | 10–14 weeks | Coordination with villa contractor; wet season |
Site work for a built-in room follows a fixed order — frame and insulation, foil vapour barrier, ventilation gap, cladding, then heater, wiring, benches, glass, and a two-hour dry run before anyone sits inside. The outdoor cabin adds a deck and roof that are usually built by the villa's own contractor to our drawings, which is why we quote its calendar with a range.
For a retreat opening on 1 December: hand-over and test firing in the third week of November, site work from the first week of November, materials landed by the end of October, deposit by the end of September, survey and fixed price mid-September, first photos early September. That leaves about ten days of slack for a late crate or a rained-out deck. If your date is closer than eight weeks, say so in the first message — we will point you at the infrared cabin or the chilled plunge that can make it, rather than promise a built-in room that cannot.
The build ends with a test firing to working temperature with you present: warm-up time, door seal, safety cut-outs, and how to run the controls. Ice baths get a 24-hour temperature hold test. Servicing rounds are scheduled by area — south coast, Senggigi, Gilis — so a call-out is never a week away, and the first maintenance visit is booked before we leave. Pricing for every build type is on the pricing page; the sauna-plus-plunge combinations we install for surf camps and villas are covered in our guide to ice baths in Lombok.
Have a date in mind? Send it with the photos and we will reply with a calendar that either fits it or says plainly that it does not.
Common questions
Six to ten weeks from first photos to a working room for a custom or outdoor cabin sauna: 2–3 days to a visualisation, about a week to a fixed price, 2–4 weeks for heater and timber to ship from Java after the deposit, and 1–3 weeks on site. An infrared cabin takes 2–4 weeks and a chilled ice bath 2–4 weeks.
Heater stock in Java, a PLN power upgrade applied for too late, difficult final access to hillside or Gili sites, and wet-season downpours between December and March that halt exterior work. We confirm heater stock before quoting a date and plan remote sites as flat-pack deliveries.
Yes. Materials cross on a supply boat and move by handcart, so cabins and tubs are delivered flat-pack and assembled on site, adding two to four days to the schedule. Servicing rounds to the Gilis are grouped by area.
Interior builds proceed normally. Outdoor cabins and decks are slowed by afternoon downpours from December to March and by slower timber acclimatisation, so we schedule exterior work for April–November where possible or add a two-week buffer.
